MERCED IRRIGATION DISTRICT

The head waters of the Merced River flow from Yosemite Vally in Yosemite National Park. The river water is stored in Lake McClure with a capacity of 1,000,000 acre feet. The Merced Irrigation District supplies water to 100,000 acres of farm land from Lake McClure.

Sierra Control Systems, Inc. has been working to provide a district wide SCADA system to control and monitor irrigation water. Water is diverted from the Merced River into a main canal and is distributed through 700 miles of canals to the farm land. The SCADA system automatically controls the flow of water at nine headworks to divert the water into 17 irrigation canals as it flows through the district. In addition there are several flow monitoring sites to accurately measure the flow of water inside canals, spills and creeks.
